Commission E Enlists Religious Leaders to Fight Drugs and Violence

Jakarta Legislative Council Commission E Chairman, M. Subki has called on religious institutions and mass organizations receiving Jakarta government grants to play an active role in solving various social issues, ranging from drug abuse and bullying to violence against women.

This call was made during a meeting with ulamas, pastors, priests, leaders of religious institutions, mass organizations, and Baznas Bazis Jakarta.

He noted that religious bodies are uniquely positioned at the heart of the community, serving as essential allies for the government.

"We want these grants to be used for priority programs that directly impact the people's interests and offer real solutions. Since these organizations engage directly with the public, coordination is vital," he expressed, Friday (7/24).

He emphasized that the government cannot resolve social issues in isolation; therefore, the support of all community sectors, including religious institutions, is essential.

"We're seeking their assistance in solving challenges like bullying, drug abuse, and violence against women. If left solely to the government, the burden would be overwhelming. We want all parties to work together to resolve these issues," he explained.

Subki also expressed his appreciation for the commitment of grant recipients who remain dedicated to improving public services despite a reduction in funding allocations.

The discussion also highlighted the diploma redemption program for students whose certificates are being withheld due to unpaid tuition fees. He urged Baznas Bazis Jakarta to sustain the initiative, noting the high number of students still in need.

"While approximately 12,000 diplomas have been successfully retrieved, the demand remains significant. We ask Baznas to continue this support so these children can secure their diplomas and either pursue higher education or enter the workforce," he continued.

He also urged schools to adopt a more compassionate and humanist approach toward students with tuition arrears.

"If the outstanding balance is too high and the family can only afford a partial payment, please assist them. Do not complicate their situation by continuing to withhold their diplomas. Be flexible so these children can exercise their rights," he emphasized.
